The Spanking Collection

Today is a special day; one I’ve been awaiting for months. The Spanking Writers, Abel and Haron, are launching their anthology collection of spanking stories by twenty bloggers and writers, the proceeds from which will all be donated to cancer research. It’s an ambitious, generous project, and I know they’ve both poured huge amounts of time and energy into it.

It’s also personally exciting to me, because they were kind enough to invite me to contribute a story, and the opportunity prompted me to write my first ever piece of ‘proper’ spanking fiction (blog posts don’t count).

The authors include some of my favourite writers – I am particularly looking forward to reading Casey Morgan, Graham Grey and Paul Bailey‘s contributions. I couldn’t wait to read the stories by Penny Docherty and Zille Defeu, which was lucky because both of them let me have a sneak peek. Both lived up to my high expectations – in very different ways.

My own story started life as a somewhat wry take on the royal wedding, which was all you could hear about at the time I was writing, and evolved into a far more in-depth piece than I’d imagined. My initial intention was to explore the complexities of consent by setting the stage for the semi-consensual punishment of a strong minded character. To make things more interesting the punishment is a judicial, ceremonial one; and the backdrop for the scenario is an arranged marriage – to which my princess entirely consents.

The punishment itself is not, initially, consensual. She is more tricked into it than forced, but in the end she chooses to go along with events wholeheartedly for varied reasons of her own.

Other things which may interest you about it: it’s a spanking story based in a Fantasy setting (I haven’t heard of many people doing this apart from Haron herself, but as an avid reader of fantasy it’s a genre fusion I’ve always been rather keen on), and none of the characters in it are white. I had almost as much fun with the world building as I did with the caning sequence itself.

This is a one-off opportunity to read not only my first ever story in print (yay!), but exclusive stories by a lot of well-known kinky authors. Every contribution to the project, including that of Abel and Haron themselves, is unpaid, and the whole thing is for an extremely good cause. It’s available in paperback and a variety of ebook formats. Please do consider buying a copy for yourself or a friend, and if you do, let me know what you think!

Mounted

A friend showed me this comic today. A lady of the manor, a callipygopterist, who likes nothing better than to display the shapely bottoms of her collection to honoured guests.

I particularly like the suggestive way she’s holding that riding crop…

Revenge is a dish best served hot

Pandora Blake spanked by Sarah Gregory at Sarah Gregory Spanking

Whee, the first scene from my shoot with Sarah Gregory has just gone live on her site. This is quite exciting for me because it’s my first ever appearance on an American website – previously I’ve only ever worked with European studios. Fame awaits! I am quite pleased that my debut across the pond was was with one of the few spanking studios run by the female spankee star. We spankee producers should stick together.

The scene is called “Revenge is a dish best served hot”. In it, Sarah and I play college room-mates. I’m minding my own business in our room when she comes in and starts making a massive fuss about the fact that she just got into trouble because our papers were too similar. Which is totally unfair – I only borrowed her paper to look up her references. Well… maybe I reworded a few of her paragraphs. Anyway, she decides to give me the same treatment she just got from her tutor. Which means a hand spanking, followed by the cane.

It was a fun, believable scenario, although it was a bit unusual for me to play someone genuinely in the wrong. Still, I got to get caned by Sarah Gregory, so no complaints here.

If you want to watch me being beaten by Sarah without having to pretend to hate every second, you’ll like this clip we filmed to promote the “Sadistic Loop” from the Sarah Gregory Cane-iac Collection. I thought I’d hate it, but after a few strokes I realised that although it was definitely painful, I could probably be persuaded to take a few more…

Erotic spanking at DarkPlay.net

If you want ethically produced, enthusiastically consensual, aesthetically beautiful kinky porn that’s respectful to women, you couldn’t do better than DarkPlay.net, the original hardcore lesbian fetish site created by Zille Defeu in 2000.

That’s over eleven years ago now – and a good few years before I met her. Five years ago, Zille decided to hand DarkPlay on to others. The site was always intended to accurately represent the fantasies and preferences of the performers, and, as she says below, “It wasn’t that I couldn’t make good girl-girl porn after marrying Mr Defeu … it was that dP had been, until that time, about my own sexual adventures. Since my focus was so much on a male-bodied person at that point, it would have been wrong for me just to shoot porn with girls and say that it was true representation of where I was at, sexually and emotionally.”

I love the whole concept and existence of DarkPlay, and I’m thrilled that it’s still alive and Zille’s labour of love hasn’t disappeared into the ether. Being an all-round inclusive fetish and hardcore site predating Zille’s discovery of her own spanko self, not every DarkPlay scene includes spanking. But watching the trailer on this page will show you that they are there if you look. Free DarkPlay content, however, is harder to get hold of … so I’m always thrilled when I stumble across a hot spanking-themed preview gallery. And even happier if it stars the lovely Zille herself.

Settling the score

200 punishment strokes with the bath brush for Pandora Blake

“I’ve got a plan,” D told me, some weeks ago. “I’m going to put you in your collar, and deal with it all at once, everything you’d accumulated up to the point where we swapped over.”

One of the reasons my exercise accounting was transferred to Tom was that D and I hadn’t had the opportunity to clear the slate in some time. I was substantially overdue.

Two days ago, we finally settled the score.

Wrists bound to the head of the bed. Ankles bound together and tied to the foot. He didn’t want me going anywhere.

My collar, just in case I hadn’t appreciated the gravity of the occasion.

200 strokes with the bathbrush.

I think it was out of kindness that D powered through them as quickly as possible. I have to confess that at the time, I struggled to appreciate his generosity. Unable to leap up and run headlong out of the room like any sensible person, I sobbed, buried my head in the pillows, bit back tears.

Halfway through, he leaned over and asked in a low voice, “Are you still going to be speaking to me after this?”

“That depends on what you do next,” I replied, unable to keep a sudden smile out of my voice.

It turns out that 200 strokes of the bath brush earns you a hell of a lot of snuggles … among other things.

Pirates and slavegirls and bondage, oh my

Ariel Anderssen and Pandora Blake are captured pirates at www.RestrainedElegance.com

Immediately after getting back from Germany, I was plunged straight into a whirlwind of activity shooting with the lovely folks of Restrained Elegance for three days of shoot trade: one day for their site, and two days for mine.

I was more than a little nervous about this shoot. I’ve been a fan of Restrained Elegance for ages – even though the doesn’t much cater to my primary kink, the quality of their work is undeniable. I think I can safely say that they are the most professional, aesthetically stylish, cinematically ambitious UK kink production company.

I’m not bendy enough to be a serious bondage model – and rope isn’t a strong enough kink for me to want to explore it for the love alone. So, while admiring the beauty of Restrained Elegance’s films and photosets, I felt it was unlikely I’d ever work for them. And yet somehow the idea was mooted, during a conversation with Amelia Jane Rutherford about booking her for my forthcoming site. Her partner Hywel, the genius behind Restrained Elegance, seemed willing, and it was agreed.

Nerves set in almost immediately. Would it matter that I don’t really fit the glamour model look, especially not now my body’s changing shape? And how would it feel producing/directing a two day shoot in my low-tech production mode with two of the most accomplished, experienced filmmakers in the business?

I’d say that of course I needn’t have worried, because AJR and Hywel are also two of the loveliest, most generous, pleasant people I’ve ever worked with, and I can’t imagine them ever being tactless about operating on a less ambitious scale than usual for a new baby website. Except actually, I think worrying about it was quite good for me: it meant I upped my game in terms of pre-shoot planning, and was much more organised than usual. I’d like to think that I’ll continue to be a bit better prepared now for future shoots. I learned a huge amount from working with them and watching them work, and was a bit overwhelmed by the whole experience – but in a good way.

Amelia was in charge of coming up with ideas for the Restrained Elegance shoot, and I think a little creative one-up-womanship snuck in as we emailed scenarios back and forth. She proposed 1940s interrogations, lady pirates tied together by their hair, captives in predicament bondage, and slavegirls playing a chess game with BDSM forfeits. Not to be outdone, I threw Victorian ghost stories, con-artists, underground D/S clubs, sword-fighting superheroes and food porn into the ring.

Of course, it wasn’t a competition – but I think both of us appreciated the chance to write scenes which were a little wilder than the content we usually get to shoot. Amelia/Ariel and I have a lot of overlapping tastes, and are both somewhat unusual in the spanking industry in being interested in willing submission as well as the more traditional role of unwilling spankee (although technically Amelia-Jane Rutherford isn’t ever submissive – she leaves that to her alter ego, Ariel Anderssen). As I was fretting about not looking enough like a glamour model, Hywel was keen to take advantage of shooting with a genuinely kinky player, and shoot some BDSM videos that would be beyond the limits of many of the models they work with. We both ended up with a good balance, I think; each coming away with a couple of classic scenarios, and one or two entirely off-the-wall ones. I think it’s a toss up whether their chess-game-with-forfeits or my canings-with-dessert video was the looniest…

I’m told that the first video from this shoot will be published on Restrained Elegance towards the end of October, and I’ll be able to share more details about the things we shot for my site with you all very soon. In the meantime, Hywel has been good enough to send me screengrabs of the chess game and the pirates in bondage, and I don’t think he’d mind if I showed some of them to you:

BDSMtag

The main reason I was in Germany was to speak at BDSMtag, the first ever public conference hosted by the BVSM, a national German lobby group on behalf of fetishists and sadomasochists. Dirk Sands, the ringmaster of SM Circus, was also instrumental in bringing the conference about, and he invited me to speak. The pet play shoot was almost an afterthought, since I was visiting anyway.

On the train to Cologne I was working on my talk on my netbook, despite the fact that I was pretty sure the chap sitting next to me spoke English. He glanced over occasionally, but didn’t seem to be paying too much attention. As we approached our destination, however, he kept trying to engage me in conversation. Eventually he came straight out and asked what a native English speaker was doing travelling from Paris to Cologne. I told him I was here for work, and he asked what sort of work I did. I laughed.

“Do you want the honest answer?”

He said yes (of course – people always do, but I feel it’s polite to give them some warning) and I replied that I was a BDSM performer and activist, and I was here to speak at a conference.

“BDSM?” he asked, not understanding. I knew that “kink” wasn’t a European word and “fetisch” didn’t occur to me, so after racking my brains, and convinced that the whole carriage was listening in, I borrowed MayMay‘s phrasing, and told him I was a sexual freedom campaigner. It felt a bit overstated, but he got it – and didn’t seem embarrassed at all. He did seem surprised that I got paid for this, and I had to explain that the conference bit was unpaid, but that I was also doing a paid performance. Luckily we pulled into the station just then, saving me from having to go into further detail.

Poster: Where does perversion start?
BVSM poster: text reads, “Where does perversion start? … We don’t care.”

The BVSM have been active for some years and have over 350 members, but this was their first conference which was open to the wider public. The transition was not a straightforward one. Many members had reservations about public visibility, and were concerned about being outed. Dirk Sands and others, however, felt that outreach was essential. Alongside their political campaigning, the BVSM aims to be the organisation which journalists consult on stories related to kink and fetish, and for this they need to be widely known. There is also a strong interest in educating the public and dispelling myths about BDSM – all of which requires publicity and accessibility.

The conference covered topics ranging from ICD-10, the classification of diseases which lists sadism and masochism as mental disorders, to SM and Christianity, and the relationship between the BDSM community and the wider public. I was asked to speak on the political situation regarding BDSM in the UK, and Director Sands suggested that perhaps the format could be question and answer, with Ludwig conducting the interview. It was a nice laid-back way to do it, and relieved the pressure on me considerably – the opportunity for dialogue made the whole thing more relaxed, and being prompted by questions saved me from having to use notecards.

It was a little odd giving the only English presentation of the day, and I’m not sure how well people were able to follow. But we decided against attempting simultaneous translation – instead a subtitled video will be released online in due course. I’ll make the English text of my talk available online when it’s up, along with a link to the video.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a new conference, the audience was not huge. I think there were 60 attendees in total, including the BVSM members – a fraction of their total membership – but also including some non-members, and a couple of journalists.

I found the language barrier a bit tricky, particularly after Ludwig and Kaelah left (the other SM Circus folk have more English than I have German, but not enough for easy conversation). While I’m sure there were other people I could have talked to, I struggled with uncharacteristic shyness – feeling as if it was horribly arrogant to expect people to speak my language – and so only brought myself to ask a couple of times. On Sunday morning things got easier as a couple of lovely people with good English approached me and struck up conversations, and I ended up having brilliant long chats with a political, bisexual, polyamorous lady switch, with whom I discovered fair amounts in common.

I also had less trouble with my fellow pet girl Jane: we both spoke cat better than the other’s language, and spent most of the weekend communicating in miaows.

I didn’t mind not being able to be wildly sociable – it gave me an excuse to revel in the privacy of my hotel room, having long showers and lazing around with a book, which was a rare treat. The only time I found myself really craving company was on Saturday night, after buying a couple of new implements from one of the stalls. I picked up a soft leather flogger with broad thongs and a clear perspex handle, just because I don’t own my own flogger yet and it was pretty, and an interestingly shaped, thick leather strap shaped like a spearhead, because I suspected it might feel rather nice. I wouldn’t have minded finding someone to help me try them out on Saturday, but the general ambience wasn’t geared towards play and, sadly, Anglophone tops weren’t listed on room service. I’ve brought them home instead, and between Tom, D and shooting I’m sure they’ll see some use sooner or later.

Return to SM Circus

Pandora Blake doing limbo at SM Circus, www.circus-sands.com

It’s funny how quickly being a petgirl comes back to you.

I’ve done this twice before. On my first training session I learned ein, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs; the postures and positions (sitz, platz); I got used to being on hands and knees, not using my hands and carrying things in my teeth. But it wasn’t until spending two days as a show pet at Boundcon 2009 that those physical skills became ingrained. How to manouver gracefully in platform heeled boots. How to climb in and out of the too-small cage in said boots. Stacking the towers of gilt boxes quickly and efficiently using only your mouth. Balancing the bamboo stick on top of them with your teeth, only able to see one end of it out of the corner of your eye. It took repeated practice before I learned to do these things easily, but as soon as I started again today, they came flooding back.

The same old games. The sponge contest, where two pets play tug of war with a sponge in their teeth, with penalties for breaking it or knocking over the stick between you (Petgirl Jane is the undefeated champion; I lost every round). Limbo, where you wriggle on your back underneath progressively lower sticks.

I’ve played the game before, and I know that you play to lose. Today, the first time the stick was lower off the ground than my pelvis measures front to back, the unfairness was hot. Humiliation, being punished for not completing impossible tasks, being shouted at in German – these are all part of the SM Circus experience. You make big puppy eyes, you sit gracefully in position and take refuge in wordlessness, you take your swats without making a fuss, and you and your fellow petgirl grin at each other behind Herr Direktor’s back. The easy grace and comfortable familiarity of the positions make it simple to stay calm.

But after Jane and I both proved that neither of us could physically fit under the limbo stick – me because of my hips, her because of her ribcage – and been beaten for it, we were told to try again. And at that point, I rebelled.

It’s not a question of try. Being told to try is stupid. And yes of course, the viewers know it’s impossible and the unfairness is the point, but the second time round, I stopped wanting to play. Once was hot. Being forced to go through it after the impossibility had already been established started to feel a bit more like being made fun of for my size, and I lost interest.

Today, though, I got to play a new game: Kaelah visited the circus, and as the only non-drinker, she was left guarding the cage while Ludwig and Herr Direktor went to the pub. As she came over to the cage to coo at the adorable little petgirls, she discovered that circus animals aren’t as cute as they seem. I grabbed her scarf through the bars, Jane broke out of the cage, and the two of us proceeded to tie up, torment and spank poor Kaelah while she swore at us, ending up with her shut up in the cage while we gloated.

Of course, we didn’t get away with it. But it was fun to have a break from the familiar cute little petgirl routine to be an evil, sadistic, feral little petgirl.

Overall, the experience was a body-positive one. As soon as I put on the high heeled boots, the leather chain belt and the open chest harness, I felt graceful, slender. Although bigger, I’m fitter and more flexible these days, which helped. The boots still dented my ankles but I didn’t sprain anything and by the end of the day on all fours my knees were red, not bruised and purpling.

Manouvering in the heels requires all your attention. I ceased to be aware of my belly and immersed myself in how safe I felt adopting the familiar postures of obedience, proud of knowing what to do, of being quick to respond despite not knowing the language. I enjoy a scene-space where I dress up in skimpy leather outfits and ridiculous heels, am tested and challenged and have strict rules to follow.

And, somehow, these games always end up, at feeding time, with me and the other petgirl licking cold rice pudding off each other, and that’s fine, too.

Technical questions for porn site users

Work on my site is going well. My schedule has been extended by D getting some contract work for the next few weeks, so I’m currently looking at a launch date in November (nicely in time for Christmas). I’ll be able to share more details with you very soon.

In the meantime, I’m running into a few questions relating to file formats and user experience. It would be useful to have some input from spanking site users as soon as possible so I can make informed decisions about these technical issues while preparing my content.

Video file format and file size

It seems to me that there are several overlapping considerations when selecting file formats for web content:

  • Operating system (Windows / Linux / Mac OS)
  • Internet connection (ADSL / mobile broadband / wifi / 3G / dial-up)
  • Usage pattern (streaming / download)

Slower internet connections and streaming users require smaller, compressed files. Users with faster broadband who are downloading prefer larger, higher-res files – but there are still upper limits on file size. As a user in the latter category, I would say that 100-300MB is a good download size for a web clip, with bigger file sizes forgiveable in longer clips. For a half hour clip I’d be happy with 500MB – for a full length feature film I’d want it to be somewhere between that and 900MB. I’d need a good reason to download a file over 1GB.

For streaming, file sizes need to be considerably lower; and viewing in a web browser rather than your desktop, it makes sense for films to be lower res too. The smaller version will double for streaming and for users with slower internet connections. I would say that in most cases these files should be under 100MB, but that up to 200MB is permissible for long films. Would you agree?

(I’m currently doing a series of experiments to work out how much impact different settings have on quality/file size. Reducing the video and audio bitrates seems to provide the most effective compression, but the question is how low you can go before the quality becomes substandard.)

Which file formats are essential if I want people to avoid having to spend ages installing codecs before they can view my content? Let’s look at the most common/widely supported options:

  • .wmv – optimised for Windows users with relatively low file size. Some Windows-using site owners think this is all you need, but they’re not straightforward to play on Linux or Macs.
  • .mov – optimised for Mac OS but playable on all systems with the right software installed.
  • .avi – good compression/quality balance. Most people can play .avi files (depending on the codec¹), and they’re very easy to burn onto DVD.
  • .mp4/.m4a – playable on all operating systems, but relatively high file sizes.

Other factors: my editing software exports directly to .wmv and .mov, but not to .avi or .mp4 – I would need to convert the file after rendering. I think there’s greater support for streaming .wmv and .mov, but I’m not sure.

So to cater to the highest number of users with the smallest number of files, I could offer one avi (low res) and one mp4 (high res); one large and one small .mov, one large and one small .wmv; or some other combination. I’d be very interested in hearing which file formats you, as a user, prefer.

Image size

I’m using a lightbox for my photogalleries, with each gallery also downloadable as a .zip file. I originally set up the lightbox with full-res images and a script to resize them to fit the browser window, but that’s resulted in slow loading times. At around 300kb a piece my photos are quite chunky. That’s 800x1200px jpgs, 72dpi, saved for web but with jpeg compression set to around 8/10, so still relatively high quality. I think that’s a good size for downloading images, but I’m wondering if I should have smaller or more compressed versions for the web galleries.

When viewing photosets online, do you prefer to download a zip and view them using your desktop file browser? Or would you rather view the whole gallery in a browser, perhaps only downloading the images that catch your eye? If the latter, there’s clearly a trade to be made between image size/quality and page loading speeds. It would be useful to collect some data on what size photos people prefer to look at, and the top file size that will load quickly on most connections.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I’m really excited about this project, and can’t wait to share more with you!

1. I think all of this depends on the codec actually. I’m still operating somewhat in the dark when it comes to codecs.

Weekend hyperkinks #3

Every time I think back on Thursday night I can’t help grinning. I feel like I did after my first well-paid glamour shoot; like a successful shoplifter. There’s a tremendous sense of self-sufficiency, and the giggling, incredulous thrill of having done something outrageous and got away with it. (Although I haven’t quite got away scot-free – aside from the hangover and a bruise on Jacq’s right cheek, my quads have been bloody painful the last two days, and I have no idea why. Can you strain them just by kneeling up on the bed for extended periods of time?)

But enough about me. On to this week’s hyperkinks!

  • My name is me: a new website bringing together people from all walks of life to challenge Google+ and Facebook’s restrictive and damaging policy disallowing pseudonyms. Violet Blue’s statement in particular is a must-read.
  • Maggie Mayhem and Kitty Stryker have put together a new website on ways members of the BDSM community can work together to prevent abuse: www.consentculture.com. Here’s an interview with them about the project, and here’s Kitty’s call for people to contribute their stories.
  • Jane of Janes Guide has written two great articles recently on this topic: BDSM, negotiation and consent, and More on BDSM and abuse. Raw, personal and thought-provoking – worth a read.
  • Lab Coats and Lingerie has a hard-hitting take on the problems with our restrictive model of what it means to be a female top in One of the nineteen. “I had no image of dominance other than the PVC-encased dominatrix, which–while fun to look at–sure isn’t anything like me. Not matching the classic femdom image didn’t just make me not a dominant … I actually believed I was not kinky.”
  • Now for some eye candy! I love this Victorian schoolgirl birching photo.
  • Elegance Studios have a trailer up for their forthcoming bondage feature film, Slave Auction
  • There’s a tremendously engaging sense of fun in this bedroom bondage photo – looking at it I feel like I’m right there with them.
  • Maggie Mayhem and her partner Ned have teamed up to launch an exciting new homegrown porn site, Meet the Mayhems. It combines sex education, informative articles, hot photos and steamy, satirical sex scenes between two people who are really into each other. At $8/month with no strict update schedule and pay-per-download options, it also represents an interesting new take on the traditional paysite model.
  • Next weekend I’m giving a talk at BDSMtag, a kink advocacy and outreach conference in Cologne. One of the organisers is Direktor Sands of SM Circus fame, and he suggested I travel over for the weekend, shoot on the Friday and attend the conference on the Saturday. They proposed an interview format for the talk, which is on BDSM and politics in the UK, so Ludwig has volunteered to help out by asking the questions. Should be fun!
  • Is Spanked, Not Silenced one of your favourite blogs? If so, please visit Between My Sheets and nominate my blog for the 2011 Sexiest Bloggers awards. There’s some great political and sex positive blogs already on the list, and a few kinky blogs, but there aren’t many candidates yet that are both political and kinky. I’d really appreciate the chance to give the topics I write about a wider reach. It’d make me very happy if one of you took the time to make a nomination :)
