Bye bye Blogger, and hello freedom

You'll have noticed that earlier this year, Google saw fit to whack a compulsory "content warning" on my blog, forcing all viewers to click through a page informing them that "some readers of this blog have contacted Google because they believe this blog's content is objectionable". I'm not sure what annoyed me more: the fact that unlike the self-selected Adult Content Warning, this was externally controlled; the fact that in a single day, my hits dropped to 1/3 of what they had been, and haven't recovered since; or the weasel wording with which Google saw fit to inconvenience my readers while disclaiming any prejudice or opinion on their part.

The disclaimer is, frankly, bullshit. Of course Google side with those who believe that adult content, or kinky content, is "objectionable". That's why Google Ad Words aren't permitted on adult blogs; why Google Checkout doesn't permit any use by adult service providers. (My account was suspended after I used it to accept payment for a spanking audio story. The filename was totally innocuous, so either one of their employees sat down and listened to the mp3 to see if it was "safe" or not, or else they judged me on the basis of my blog contents.)

The only reason I stayed with Blogger so long was lack of time to setup a new blog elsewhere. This new content warning pushed the move higher up my priority list. And I can now, not before time, happily announce that this blog has moved permanently to a self-hosted, independent home.

I haven't quite arranged everything to my satisfaction yet, and will be adding more pages, widgets and links over the next little while, so bear with me if anything seems unfinished. But it's good enough to get going. Please update your bookmarks, links and feed readers to point to my new url, www.pandorablake.com.

So bye bye Blogger, Google and your discrimination against adult content, and hello, independence.

Love the bright new look -- it's lovely to look at and easier to read. And bravo for ditching the warning pages. :)

Nice to see your new digs.

Thanks! It's been bugging me for weeks, and the Wordpress move is something I'd been planning for ages anyway. I feel much more at home here, looking forward to taking my time and settling in properly.

Virtual blogwarming party this weekend maybe? :)

I'm relieved to hear both that you managed to retrieve your content, and that you've migrated to Wordpress anyway. The way Google has treated you is appalling and yes, I quite agree that a phone number is not the best way to prove someone's identity, given privacy concerns (what's wrong with an email address?)

In general, I dislike the way that Google deal with privacy, and how hard they make it for people to maintain multiple identities. I know that a lot of their employees are motivated by an honest desire to improve user experience but I don't really need my web use to be that joined up, and I certainly don't like not being in control of whether different web apps share my data between them. Monopolies are unhealthy, and I'm pleased that Blogger's behaviour is chasing people out into self-hosted, open source options.

Of course, I already knew WP was far superior as blogging software, I just didn't have the motivation to spend the week or so I knew it'd take to get everything set up the way I wanted.

I've added your new link to my blogroll - look forward to chatting to you in new kinky spaces of our own devising :)

A third party might be responsible. My blog did come in for some unwanted attention in 2007 and then again in 2008 from some Vlaams Belang (Flemish racist organisation) Blogs and a website. I have not noticed any traffic coming from these sources, from Statcounter, in recent times though.

Thanks! I liked the rich aubergine of the old design, but I wanted to move away from the ubiquitous pink/red/purple theme of sex and kink websites and stretch my aesthetic wings a bit. My new site is probably going to be black/white/gold, so variety is good - and dark text on pale is easier to read, which is useful given how long I tend to go on for ;)

I'm feeling increasingly liberated by sticking two fingers up to Google!

Will – Oh, I’m glad it wasn’t just me! Thanks so much to you (and for all the other loyal 1/3 of my readers) for persisting and clicking through despite the inconvenience and irritation. I love you all for it. And I’m feeling all refreshed and inspired with post ideas, so hopefully I’ll make it worth your while

Punishment of Pandora – is that a Roué production? Yes, movement is happening – Dave wants to wait until Lost Causes (film #3) is ready and then release them as a trilogy. I’m afraid that’s actually waiting on me atm, as I need to send him copy for the DVD cover. I’ll hopefully find time to write something on my netbook while I’m in London this week

Wordpress has an embedded Blogger to Wordpress importer. I had a bit of trouble with server permissions, but once my sysadmin had done some ssl tweaking it worked fine.

You can also export your Blogger blog as an .xml file to make a general backup, which can then be re-imported to a variety of blog hosts.

I did find that the import inserted a > tag at the start of all posts and comments, which was extremely annoying, but D wrote me a script which went through and removed them all, which only took him an hour. I was glad to pay his hourly rate for it - it saved me about a day of tedious data entry!

I know right? "Don't be evil" apparently doesn't include any sensitivity towards personal privacy, anonymous online activity or the idea that you know, sex might actually be ethically okay.

Thanks! Yeah, the import took some guddling about, but I managed to get it sorted eventually. Trying to do it in the few days when my sysadmin was mostly offline didn't help ;)

Thanks very much, I'm glad you like it! I liked the colour scheme of the old design but this one is much slicker and more professional, which is a relief as the limitations of the other one wound me up a lot. The theme it's based on is Phonegadget, although I've obviously tweaked the cosmetics - I used it as a base because it had some neat functionality, but I was always going to want a custom design.

I would never choose one of the self-elected content warnings as the extra click is so likely to put off new or casual viewers, but I respect people's right to use them if they're THAT worried about kids or prudes accidentally clicking through. Even then though, I think Blogger's implementation is annoying - the code is clunky, the page slow to load, and unlike the "over 18" buttons on the front page of most adult sites, you don't even get to keep your branding. It feels good to step out from under it!

In point of fact, Yahoo! has nothing to do with Google. They are pretty fiercely competitive. And while Youtube is owned by Google, they act fairly independently (while both are in the SF Bay area, they are about 25 miles apart and operate different infrastructures).

What almost certainly happened was that a third party (neither Google nor Yahoo!) made complaints about you to every possible venue.

And generally speaking there's no earthly reason why a commercial "ad supported" entity would spend the time to figure out whether or not a particular situation is or is not across some arbitrary line of "decency". It's far easier and cheaper to react "blindly", which is to say that the response is actually to the fact of the complaint, not the substance of it. This way they don't have to create their own standards, they just process complaints. Sure, they'll catch some "false positives" and those with malicious intent, but you aren't paying them enough to care.

[ In a similar vein, this is why clubs often check the IDs of everyone regardless of apparent age; they can then state that they check the ID of everyone, and no judgment call is required. ]

I completely agree with your rant against Google. On the 13th of this month they wiped my blog and denied me access to my channels on YouTube and access to all my Yahoo email accounts were blocked (I didn't even know that Yahoo had anything to do with Google before that). That left me with one Gmail email account with which to talk to the outside world. And they did all this without a word of warning or giving a reason. On top of all this they wanted me to give them my phone numbers, which in my book they did not need and I count as phishing. I have everything back now (with a warning page on the blog) but still have not had any reason for all this given by them. I have set up a new Wordpress blog and although I have given myself to the weekend to think it over I am 99.9% decided that I am moving there permanently. Perhaps that will help rid my mouth of this bitter taste.

good move, I don't even like the self-elected 'content warnings' much but that is horrendous to have such a censorious judgement on your content.

People just are letting this kind of thing slip in without so much as a whisper.

Good on you for making a stance!

Even then though, I think Blogger's implementation is annoying - the code is clunky, the page slow to load, and unlike the "over 18" buttons on the front page of most adult sites, you don't even get to keep your branding. It feels good to step out from under it!

Nice header and layout. I liked the dark, heavy look of the other blog, but this design is prettier.

Google? Screw 'em. It's good there are better choices for adult content, and people should be made aware of that before they waste their time.

I just wanted to say how mildly but persistently offensive I've found that Google warning about "some people" finding the blog "objectionable" - each time I proceeded past it, I had an irritable inner riposte along the lines of "Well I have repeatedly not found it objectionable, and I haven't reported the fact to Google". I was worried that this might be a tentative prelude to Google banning the site or something, and cursing myself for lacking the resolve to bloody well do something about it, like starting a Facebook campaign or writing a monograph on it. Anyway, I'm very glad you've set up this new URL, and best wishes for all future projects. Oh yes, and how's the paysite coming on? And will "The Punishment of Pandaora" ever be available on DVD?

Yours sincerely,

Willj

New blog looks great - any tips on saving old content from Google and tranferring it?

Congratulations on the new site. The behaviour of Google reminds of the old saying about power corrupting - any idealism that company ever had is disappearing rapidly.

Pleased you got your migration woes fixed.
Nice theme!

Welcome to world of personal blogging without the over zealous censorship from people who think they know better.

Oh, but this looks lovely! Welcome to the WordPress blogger family :)

Out of curiousity, what theme are you using for it?

Have updated my Blogroll :-)

Google is quite evil I think. Youtube has deleted my account after uploading a movie about the petplayer group at the CSD (gay pride) in Cologne. A public event! Without any explicit sexual sequence! If do you have a FL-account you can watch it at http://fetlife.com/users/549073/videos/20419 But Youtube/Google has written me that it was against the terms and have deleted my account... Google is evil!

If you ask me, the entire internet needs a "may contain adult content" warning that you need to accept when you get an account with an ISP. Then once you're in you're in.

In other news, I noted that the latest bbc story that young people are still worried about their sex lives does at least confirm that a third of women will admit to using online porn.

I'm surprised it took you this long :)

I had been constantly worried about not having my own freedom on my blogs, too, until recently as I didn't own a couple of the domains or even host them outright (I do now).
I even had a few taken away then totally trashed or my affiliate links changed (I used to guest write at the SOL blog - I won't deem to gibe them a link as it's a crap promo blog, but that was purely for financial gain and all my links have been changed there, everything stretching back years... which is just low.)
Until you totally own your domain or blog/site content management, then you can never be free!

Anyway, will be updating your link on my blog and good riddance to Google/Blogger!

Chief

The new site looks great! I've heard from friends that wordpress really rocks as far as content management software. I have one blog on Wordpress and now I'm thinking I need to move all mine over there, particularly the spanking-oriented one.

Hello Pandora

I was in hosp in Sept. When I got out and tried to read yr blog, I found I couldn't get past the warning page. So for months I couldn't read your material. MOST annoying. Yr new host is letting me in so now it's all good.

Love D

Congrats, darling, on the move! I haven't been doing anything with my blog lately--have no idea what to write in the current circumstances, but I don't want to lose the old content. I might try and import it somewhere just in case.

Congratulations on breaking free from the net-nannies and good luck to the new blog

Hi, Pandora, love the spiffy new digs. Good luck with your new endevors.

And Thank You,

Luv your new look. I never liked blogger. Google is as evil as Dick Cheney in his Darth Vader costume. I never lurk on "blogspot" either as they want me to "sign in" and turn on my cookies. I would have had to do that to comment on blogger. Anyway, welcome to the light side. :-)

Belated congratulations on your freedom. I haven't had time to read much or comment on blogs lately, so when I can, I am planning to catch up with what you have written since the move.

The only reason for me to stay on Blogger with my own blog is that I can't be bothered to set up a website of my own right now. I just don't have the time for a move like that, even though I have been toying with the idea of leaving Blogger / Google behind for some time.

@ Tigerbutt: You don't actually have to use a Google account if you want to comment on a blog on Blogger. You can just comment anonymously if you prefer that, or use a nickname of your choice without using a Google account.
