Working as a producer/director team alongside the Rou crew, Tom and I wrote the script based on characters from our previous Rou production; fin de sicle finishing school lesbian Miranda Somerville and her dancing instructor and master of discipline, Thomas Cameron (Tom originally took his screen name from this character).
Lost Causes was our collective attempt to produce a female-friendly historical spanking fantasy with an interesting plot, engaging characters and the highest possible production values within budget. The scale of the production was far higher than anything I have attempted since for my own site. The two-day shoot involved three performers and four crew - a lot for a small-scale fetish film production. A third day was spent filming additional location shots.
The finished film is now available in two DVD versions. There's a cut which has been 18-rated by the British Board of Film Classification and is available to buy in UK adult shops - a rarity for spanking films. The BBFC are reluctant to approve any shots of welts or damage, so the rated version combines subtle editing of face camera angles (just like in real BBC period dramas!) with a "light" version of a couple of scenes which we filmed at the start of the shoot to avoid marks.
The full/unrated version, which of course is what all reasonable hot-blooded spankophiles will want to see, is now available to order online from Rou.com. Given the choice, this is the version of the film I recommend.

Expelled from her old school, Miranda Somerville is sent to stay with her old Master of Discipline. With his new educational method, Mr Cameron hopes to salvage the lost causes among England's young ladies. Senior girl Imogen is given permission to punish the new girl, and Miranda quickly realises that she faces the strictest discipline of her young life. Both pupils are subjected to severe punishments from Mr Cameron with switch, clothes brush and cane. A powerful tale of friendship, forlorn hope and institutional discipline set in the Edwardian era.
The film includes five main punishment sequences, most of which are hard enough to satisfy even my and Tom's severity kink. The storyline goes like this.
The year is 1911. Miranda Somerville, freshly expelled from Madame Fourier's finishing school in Paris after being caught in flagrante with another young lady, travels to an isolated house in the English countryside, the only establishment willing to take her on after her disgrace.
She is shocked to discover that she recognises Mr Cameron, her old dance instructor who also kept a number of her secrets. But her hopes that this represents a friendly face are quickly dashed. Miranda is not prepared for the cold strictness of his manner.
Reporting to his study after changing into her new uniform, Miranda pauses outside the door, hearing the sounds of a whipping taking place within. Timidly, she knocks, and is introduced to her new classmate, a fierce-looking girl named Imogen who has just borne the brunt of Cameron's tawse.
Both girls are caned, Imogen for her prior disobedience, and Miranda by way of an example, to show her the sort of discipline she can expect from now on.
The message is clear: everyone has given her up for a lost cause, and her new home is a horrible correctional institution. Miranda is quite alone.
Imogen, who has been given some disciplinary authority over the new girl, gleefully frightens Miranda with tales of Mr Cameron's brutality and the strict regime to which she will be subject. Miranda tries to befriend her, but is rebuffed. Imogen has heard stories of Miranda's deviance and wants nothing to do with her.
Imogen's failure to acquaint Miranda with the rules quickly leads her into trouble. Cameron catches Miranda sunning herself with a book in the grounds when she was meant to be indoors.
Retribution is swift and awful: she is made to cut her own switch, and then kneel on the grass with her skirts around her waist as he thrashes her.
Next time she sees Imogen, Miranda confronts her about not telling her the relevant rules. The two end up bickering in the classroom and find themselves both bent over their wooden school desks for a taste of Cameron's hard hand. During the lesson Miranda sees an opportunity to get her own back, and when Cameron is not looking she provokes Imogen into attacking her.
Cameron hauls Imogen up to the front of the class and subjects her to a brutal, blistering punishment with a heavy wooden clothes brush that leaves her whole backside dark red and purple.
Miranda is appalled... but the classroom is certainly peaceful for the rest of the day.
That evening, Miranda reaches her bedroom to discover Imogen lying in wait for her. Imogen has found Miranda's secret: a library book of sentimental value, stolen from the library at Madame Fourier's. Cameron will know exactly what significance this edition of the poems of Sappho has to Miranda, and where it has come from.
Imogen blackmails Miranda into accepting a punishment from her. Miranda's shocked struggles are to no avail as the vengeful Imogen pins her down on the bed with her arm twisted behind her and lays into her with her hairbrush until her anger is spent.
Having exhausted her temper, Imogen relents. The two girls reconcile, soothe each other's punished bottoms and commiserate over their shared fate.
But they both have a number of black marks against them, and still have to face Cameron for their first Sunday Reckoning.
That Sunday before church, the two girls each take strokes of the cane for their misbehaviour during the week. They stand united to take their punishment, holding hands and doing their best to console one another. But even though she has found a new ally, Miranda is well aware that this is only the start of what promises to be a very long year.
